Our opinion on Subaru Forester
The Subaru Forester Estate 148bhp 2.0-litre petrol unit that's available, does lack the mid range oomph, something that's easily noticeable with the four-speed automatic gearbox. Thankfully there's a 2.2-litre diesel coming along in September. All versions of the Forester have permanent four-wheel-drive and the manual gearbox also have low-ratio gears, to aid off-roading.
The Subaru Forester has always ridden well and can even be driven off-road relatively well. There’s certainly good body control as well, though the automatic is noticeably more of a bouncy ride. The power-assisted steering delivers no noticeable feedback, however the permanent four-wheel-drive gives lots of grip and traction through and out of corners. The stability control is standard.
Subarus are almost impossible to find fault with when it comes to breaking down. If there does happen to be a failing, it’s in the look and unappealing interior.
The Forester has curtain airbags as standard now alongside the stability control which are the two main improvements over what was on offer before. There are also improved brakes with an electronic distribution of the stopping power to shorten its braking distances.
